For you, this means little change, since you can continue using your app or device as usual. Furthermore we also make an adjustment in the frequency of map releases. You'll get within the next two years at least a map update per year. (Expected release dates: end of 2018 and end of 2019) New purchases of maps within the apps or for your NAVIGON device are not possbile anymore, unless you use a VW, Seat or Skoda device. We always aim to provide our customers with the new maps right after the tests have concluded successfully and release them in the order of completion.
Garmin has decided to take all navigation apps off the market as of May 14th, 2018. Therefore you are able to use the NAVIGON app, whether on foot, in a car or on a bike, without a mobile data connection. If you are using the NAVIGON Select app, then a mobile data connection has to be available for every app start. This is for the verification of the user's license. This can not be avoided as this is a fixed element of the NAVIGON Select license. A mobile data connection is only necessary with the purchased NAVIGON app when initially started after the installation for registration purposes. Real-time services (available as in-app purchases via the In-App-Shop in the App) like Traffic Live, Mobile Alert Live, Mobile Alert Live Premium, Mobile Alert Live Upgrade and Urban Guidance always require a mobile data connection to fully function. It is possible to use offline navigation if internet is not available but without the real-time services. If you would like to leave the mobile data connection activated yet want to use the NAVIGON app offline, then follow these steps to deactivate it: Open the Settings of your mobile device. Select Mobile data . Look for the NAVIGON app and slide the switch to the left to deactivate it. Real-time services receive information within seconds from the service provider, just like a traffic company, to avoid traffic delays while navigating. This information can only be received while connected to the internet via a mobile data connection.
The NAVIGON app is a navigation based software with offline map data for mobile phones and tablets.

All maps for navigation (those which are required) have to be downloaded via Wi-Fi. There could be many reasons: Wrong charge cable Additional Bluetooth/ WiFi activated Parallel used apps/ services Old firmware Solution If you use a headset you can activate the screen lock. So you get only the navigation advices via headset and the screen will not discharge the battery. You should deactivate Bluetooth and/or WiFi if not needed. The navigation software and maps are saved on the device. It can perform the route calculation itself. Everything you need for your onboard navigation (device, software, maps),you only have to purchase once. You can use it indefinitely, there will be no further charges. Offboard-Navigation The navigation is offered as a service. Communication between the navigation device and the server of the service provider takes place via a mobile radio connection (GPRS/UMTS) The maps are located on the server and are always up to date. The software on the navigation device handles communication with the server and the navigation along the routes which the server calculates. For the offboard navigation, you need a mobile device and a gps receiver (possibly integrated). Often the software will be free of charge. For the navigation service, there are different billing models, e.g. billing according to individual routes or subscriptions, which allow the unlimited use of the service for a certain period of time. There are also costs for using the mobile network.
Onboard-navigation

The navigation device works self-sufficient. The navigation software and maps are saved on the device. Therefore it is possible to select "Fastest Route", but getting a route which takes longer to reach the destination than with the selection on "Optimal Route". For example, the Route profile "Fast" doesn't mean you get the fastest route between A and B. The app is calculating the route by comprising streets, that allow high speed limits, such as highways and motorways. There are four Route profiles to choose from: Short: The shortest route will be calculated (also including dirt roads). Included are city centers and restricted areas. Therefore the shortest route is not necessarily the most timesaving route. Optimum: This calculates the most direct route, which can also include city centers. Restricted areas are being avoided. Therefore the optimal route is not necessarily the most timesaving route. Fast: The app tries to calculate the route by comprising it mostly via motorways and highways. If you forbid highways in your route profile, the app tries to navigate you alongside a highway. Please mind in this case, the selection of the fastest route can lead to detours, as the app tries to navigate you as close to highways and motorways as possible. Scenic: This route profile is suitable for motorcyclists. Highways and motorways are being avoided. The app calculates a route with more demanding requirements (many bends, hills, valleys).
The name of the Route profile does not specify how the route is calculated in general. From our experience, there are a few points to be taken into account which improves positioning. We therefore recommend checking the following to ensure a good GPS signal while navigating. Basically: All apps, just like our NAVIGON app, receive the necessary information for a location via the end user device. For this, the official interfaces of the end user device are used, which then forwards the determined location to the app. Apps generally do not have any influence on the GPS signal, instead, they use the the location data of the end user device. This decides itself, by which different ways the location is determined. Ordinarily, a rough determination of location is firstly calculated via the Wi-Fi and the available radio cell. This is sufficient for displaying a position on the map and, for example, to look for specific things in the surrounding area. Following this, an exact location can be determined via the GPS Module of the end user device. The orientation of the map is implemented in connection with a built-in gyroscope. This kind of determination of location is basically necessary for all navigation apps. It is for this reason, that a good GPS signal is an advantage when ensuring a precise navigation with our app. Other apps, which only display a location or implement a search of the surrounding area, only use a simple positioning( Wi-Fi/radio cell). Possible origin of error: Positioning of the device in a vehicle The positioning/mounting of the end user device in the vehicle is important to receiving a good GPS signal. It is optimal to position the end user device in a special mount near the windscreen to allow the built-in GPS antenna to point to the open sky. Is the mobile device laid lower in the tray or upside-down in a drink's tray, then it is impossible to determine a location. This causes the navigation not to function at all or break-off on occasion. Windshield Heat Blocker If the vehicle comes with a windshield heat blocker, so-called heat insulation glass, the GPS signal in the vehicle is limited. The metal layer on the windshield reflects the GPS signal, which is why not enough signals are able to be sent/received. Normally there is a notch in the coating of this sort of windshield of such vehicles (mostly in the area of the rear-view mirror) to enable the the exchange of radio waves (i.e. mobile data reception, GPS, garage door opener or radio devices). It best to position the device there to enable a satisfactory GPS reception. More information to this can be found in the operation manual of the vehicle or at your car dealership. Such conditions can prolong the determination of location. If the journey is started without having received an available GPS signal, then it is not possible to calculate a route. GPS signals will indeed be searched for while driving, but these are determined far better while not in motion (i.e. at a red light, parked). If you have been able to exclude these origin of errors and continue to experience bad positioning, then this may be down to a hardware defect of the end user device. In this case, we recommend contacting the manufacturer of the device, who will be able to assist in providing further information on GPS signals or repair the device.
A general malfunction regarding the determination of location with our app is not known. (Here Maps) 2018-11-22T15:26:47+01:00 15002725674 1 2018-04-24T10:49:27+02:00 2 0 The basis for our navigation maps is the detailed and comprehensive coverage of the road network. The map data must be permanently updated, as about 15% of the road network changes every year (new roads, changes in the road, one-way streets, etc.). The map data is not generated by NAVIGON, but supplied by the specialized map supplier HERE. To keep the maps up to date, every year millions of road miles are covered, digitized and marked with detailed traffic information. Detailed traffic information includes road or road sections (e.g. one-way, turn-over, motorway, country road, speed limit), but also special destinations ( POIs, train stations, petrol stations, restaurants). To gather this information, special equipped cars are used. Afterwards, the data will be digitized through a complex process, that takes several months. You can be assured that with the NAVIGON-software or the NAVIGON devices, you are using the latest available maps.
The basis for our navigation maps is the detailed and comprehensive coverage of the road network.
